Design
Most "Web Design" firms focus only on Design and give little thought to the rest of a website's functions. We at Shadow Development seperate each phase of website creation into its own area. We start with Design, then proceed with Development, Server Setup, Domain Management, SSL Integration, Mobile Site Setup, and more.
Our own team of Designers focus only on one thing: web design. However, there is so much more than just design when designing a site: usability, balance of text and color, quick location of information, environmental situations, and common sense are put into the process when designing a site.
First impressions are the most important. Many people have been told "The first 2 minutes of a job interview are the most important." While first impressions may be as short as 2 minutes for a face-to-face discussion, people make first impressions about websites in less than 7 seconds! Therefore, the Design of a website is one of the most important aspects.
Design for Scanning, not Reading
When providing a layout for websites, one of the major aspects is to design it for scanning instead of reading. Along with getting a first impression of a website, research shows that visitors scan webpages to find their information rather than reading every line of text.
Why? There is no reason to read every page of the Dictionary to find the defination for one specific word. Visitors scan items like magazines, newspapers, and websites to get the information they are searching for.
"We're thinking "great literature" (or at least "product brochure"), while the user's reality is much closer to "billboard going by at 60 miles an hour." - Steve Krug, Don't Make Me Think
What We Design For

The Reality

Pencils down up!
The first step in designing a great website is to start with the Drawing Board. Literally. Our designers hand-draw rough drafts of ideas based on the Client's needs and wants for their new or revisted site.
Our Designers perform many kinds of research on industry-related companies, design templates (for concepts), previous samples, and more, to create ideas for a unique design. Once the research has been completed, designs for the proposed website are drawn on multiple papers, whiteboards, and post-it notes, just to make sure everything works well.
After the design mockups have been completed, we present them to the Client for approval.
I want Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry!
We send multiple mockups to our Clients for various reasons - the primary reason being that the Client can choose which design they like best, or the best features of each. This way, the Client knows what our capabilities are and they are assured that what they approve of will become their new site.
Once the final design has been approved, the design is finally handed off to the Development Team.
